Lymphoedema Park Walk
06 September 2011
Lymphoedema Awareness Week is a national campaign which this year featured a virtual relay of Lymphoedema services with a series of events held across the country which encouraged patients to "step forward" to the challenge of sustaining and increasing their mobility.
“The theme of the week nationally was Step up for Lymphoedema," explained Diane Cheevers, Lead Nurse for Lymphoedema at the Hospice. "By being creative and encouraging our patients to make one more step than usual we were able to highlight the importance of movement in helping with the overall treatment of Lymphoedema."
The walk was held in line with the British Lymphology Society and the Lymphoedema Support Network with the aim being for each person to walk within their own ability whether it was five steps or 500 steps.
"Our lymphoedema patients stepped up to the challenge of sustaining and increasing their mobility by carrying out walks of varying distances which included a walk around a rose garden,” said Diane.
The event was supported by Danson Stables who supplied free refreshments for the thirsty walkers on their return and a lymphoedema information stall was set up outside.
