Respite Care

The Hospice offers respite care in a variety of forms. Our respite services aim to give carers a break and can often help to keep you, the patient at home by preventing a crisis and providing planned breaks.

Respite care is the provision of temporary relief to those who are caring for family members or friends, by giving these breaks either planned or in response to changes in circumstance, we aim to support and maintain you and your carer’s relationship. Respite can also provide you with an opportunity to meet other people in a social setting or you can have your needs reviewed: for example we can review your medication or symptoms.

Even though many families take great joy in providing care to their loved ones so that they can remain at home, the physical, emotional and financial consequences for the carer can be overwhelming without some support.  Respite provides carers with the much needed temporary break from the often exhausting challenges faced.

You can access regular respite care here at the Hospice in the day care service, or for a short stay in our inpatient unit.  We are also currently piloting a volunteer befriending service in the home for carers of people with long term neurological conditions such as motor neurone disease and multiple sclerosis.

You can contact the service on 020 8320 5820 for an informal discussion or referrals can be made via your GP, Hospital Consultant or Nurse.
