Non-Executive Director, Trading Board (unremunerated)

We are Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice (GBCH), a place full of life, offering free, compassionate care and support, for people with terminal illness, their families and carers, in the London Boroughs of Royal Greenwich and Bexley.

Each year, the Hospice cares for around 3,000 people with terminal illness, as well as their families; we do this in patients’ homes, in care homes and in our local prisons, as well as at the Hospice in our inpatient and outpatient facilities and at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Woolwich. We provide holistic care that goes beyond physical needs; offering spiritual, social and psychological care, advice and support. We also support and educate others to deliver high quality, individualised and co-ordinated end of life care.

The care we provide is free of charge and that is why the income generated through our charity shops and online trading is so important. Our retail arm is operated under a trading subsidiary, GBCH Trading Ltd.

We are looking to recruit two committed and enthusiastic people to strengthen our newly established Trading Board and help us in the next phase of our development as we transform our retail network.

Non-Executive Directors will be responsible for supporting the good governance and strategic direction of the Trading Company alongside the current five Directors who are either executive members of the hospice team or trustees of the parent charity.

Previous board experience is not necessary, but you will have a strong commercial background and be generous in sharing your knowledge and experience. If you have a passion for the charity sector, have relevant retail or wider commercial experience and would like to make a positive contribution to the work we do, then we would love to hear from you.

As a Non Executive Director you will have:

  • Induction, training & reimbursable expenses
  • Opportunities to make strategic decisions and develop new skills
  • Opportunity to attend funded training as required
  • Opportunities to work with senior professionals
  • The chance to use your skills and experience to drive forward the commercial arm of the hospice to benefit patients at the end of their life.

The minimum expected time commitment is currently four Trading Board meetings per year as well as ad hoc support to the executive team.
