Date: Sunday 1st October

Timings: 10am to 4pm

Distance: Various from 14 miles to 28 miles

Start locations: 

  • Morrisons Erith, James Watt Way, DA8 2AH
  • Thamesmere Leisure Centre, Thamesmere Dr, London, SE28 8RE
  • Firepower Museum, Royal Arsenal, London SE18 6ST
  • Cutty Sark, King William Walk, London SE10 9HT

Registration fee:  £10 per adult, £5 per child (5 – 15 years).
Special family fee of £25 (2 adults & 2 children)

On-The-Day registration fee: £20 per adult and £5 per child

Big Bike Ride

Billed as the largest sponsored bike ride in South East London, our Big Bike Ride offers cyclists, of all abilities, the chance to cycle the length of the River Thames from Erith through to Greenwich enjoying the stunning views as they go. The majority of the routes follow the Thames Cycle Path making the Big Bike Ride popular with families, as well as experienced and novice cyclists, wanting to enjoy a leisurely day’s cycling.

The Big Bike Ride is part of Totally Thames 2017.

With a choice of cycling 14, 19 or 28 miles and with four start locations in Erith, Thamesmead, Woolwich and Greenwich, the Big Bike Ride offers flexibility to all our cyclists. Simply choose your starting location, decide how far you’d like to go and we’ll see you on the day!

Don’t have a bike? Don’t miss out!

For those who don’t have their own bike, a bike hire scheme will be on offer so that they can join in the fun. The offer, with Now’s The Time, will offer adults’ and kids’ bikes for hire for just £1 (plus a £20 refundable deposit). Greenwich Council and Now’s The Time are offering Cycle Days to those who want to gain some extra confidence and get ready for the Big Bike Ride.

The Routes

Big Bike Ride

The majority of the route follows the Thames Cycle Path however please be aware that there are some areas that will take cyclists onto the roads. Hospice marshals will be in these areas to assist cyclists.

28 mile Route (Erith to Greenwich and back) Morrisons in Erith - Erith Riverside – Belvedere Marshes – Crossness Water Works and the famous Victorian Pumping Station – Thames Water Nature Reserve – Thamesmead – Woolwich Arsenal – Woolwich Ferry – Thames Barrier – The 02 Arena – Old Royal Naval College – Cutty Sark Gardens, Greenwich.

19 mile Route (Thamesmead to Greenwich and back) Thamesmere Leisure Centre – Woolwich Arsenal – Woolwich Ferry – Thames Barrier – The 02 Arena – Old Royal Naval College – Cutty Sark Gardens, Greenwich.

14 mile Route (Woolwich Arsenal to Greenwich and back)  Firepower Museum, Woolwich – Woolwich Ferry – Thames Barrier – 02 Arena – The Old Royal Naval College – Cutty Sark Gardens

14 mile Route (Erith to Woolwich Arsenal and back)  Morrison’s in Erith – Erith Riverside – Belvedere Marshes – Crossness Water Works and the famous Victorian Pumping Station – Thames Water Nature Reserve – Woolwich Arsenal.

Bike check Greenwich Council’s Dr Bike will offer a free bike check at the Greenwich and Thamesmead start points. A free bike check will also be available from the Erith start point. Bike checks are free, although a donation to the hospice would be greatly appreciated.

Refreshments A limited amount of free bottled water will be available at each start point.

First Aid Qualified first aiders will be found at the start and finish location and at Woolwich and Greenwich. There will also be a mobile medic.

Safety We want you to enjoy your day whilst remaining safe at all times. Any children under 16 years of age must wear a helmet; we do advise that all participants wear a cycle helmet.

Parking & Toilets

Erith:

  • ***There is now a 3 hour car park limit to park in Morrisons Erith car park. ***Alternative, paid by the hour, car parking can be found  at  Riverside Shopping Centre Car Park
  • Two portable toilets will be available at this start point.

Thamesmead:

  • Free parking will be available at Thamesmere Leisure Centre and refreshments and toilets facilities will be available from this start location.  

Woolwich:

  • Big Bike Riders can purchase a £1 car park scratch card which entitles you to 2 hours parking at the Waterfront Leisure Centre. To cover your stay for the day you may need to purchase two scratch cards for 4 hours parking. Please report to the Waterfront reception on the morning to purchase your scratch card.  The Woolwich registration point is just a short walk from the Waterfront Leisure Centre.
  • There are public toilets by the Waterfont Leisure centre and there will be a portable toilet by at this start point

Greenwich:

  • There is no free parking in Greenwich so please park according to the relevant parking regulations.
  • There are public toilets nearby (Cutty Sark Gardens are a World Heritage Site so the Hospice are not permitted to locate a portable toilet here).
