Volunteer With Award Our care

Congratulations to June, one of our fantastic Day Hospice volunteers, who picked up an award at Bexley Volunteer Awards earlier this week. June was surprised when she heard she’d been nominated by our Volunteers Manager, Rahima. She was embarrassed to be the centre of attention, but delighted to win the award, which was presented by the Mayor of Bexley, Cllr Geraldene Lucia-Hennis.

June volunteers at the Day Hospice every Monday and Thursday and has been helping out for 2 1/2 years. June’s first job was working in a florist’s where they supplied flowers for Buckingham Palace and St. Paul’s Cathedral (plus to us regular folk!). She’s kept her hand in with flower arranging and now shares her skills with people at the Day Hospice.

June’s a real force of nature and is involved in lots of different aspects of the Day Hospice including: leading exercise classes, card making, mosaics, painting, flower arranging, and cake making.

“I love what I do, helping other people to try new things, giving something different a try. They’re all such great people and it’s lovely to be able to share with them.”

It’s not all give, give, give, June says she gets so much from volunteering. “I get the satisfaction that I’ve done something worthwhile. I’ve got a busy life, but if I was at home right now I’d be sitting in four walls, but here I’m in a different four walls with great people!”

Congratulations June, You’re a Local Hero!
