Gardener – Volunteer

Volunteer Role Profile 

 

Volunteer Role:  Gardener (5 roles available) 

Time commitment: 4 hours per week (or more if you have the time) on either Mondays, Wednesdays or Fridays 

Volunteer Manager: Head Gardener 

Where you will be based: Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice , 185 Bostall Hill, Abbey Wood, London, SE2 0GB  

 

Why we want you 

To be part of a team maintaining the gardens of the Hospice under the guidance of the Head Gardener, for the benefit of all those who are present in the Hospice and the surrounding wildlife.                                

What you will be doing 

  • Assisting in all aspects of gardening including weeding, planting, pruning, watering, sweeping up and general tidying, including the paved areas, driveway and car parks
     
  • Cleaning tools and equipment as necessary and returning to their designated area when tasks are completed or at the end of the day. Volunteers will not be asked to use power tools unless specifically qualified and authorised to do so
     
  • Appropriate disposal of garden waste in the designated areas
     
  • Notifying the Head Gardener of any construction/maintenance issues
     
  • From time to time, assisting the Maintenance Team with tasks where an extra pairs of hands are needed, such as receiving deliveries, laying paths etc. 

 

The skills and qualities you need  

  • Some gardening knowledge and experience, with a willingness to broaden this with guidance by the Head Gardener
     
  • Able to use initiative and take directions as part of the gardening team 

 

  • Reasonably physically fit and able to work independently
     
  • A polite manner 

 

  • Able to work in a variety of weather conditions
