Hospice Shop Volunteer

Outline

Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice has a number of charity shops across both boroughs.  These shops are an excellent way for the community to support the hospice through shopping, donating and volunteering.  As well as raising much needed funds for the hospice they also help raise our profile in the community, enabling people to learn more about how we support people with life limiting illness.  Volunteers support shop managers to ensure that the shop is an attractive and welcoming place and that we are able to maximise our income.  Volunteers can work in a variety of different areas within the shop.

Main roles and responsibilities

  • Greeting and serving customers
  • Sorting donations and ragging and rubbishing all items not for resale
  • Hanging and tagging clothing and other items
  • Handling money and operating the till, including reconciliation
  • Selling hospice lottery tickets
  • Receiving donations and processing gift aid registration
  • Ensuring the shop is clean and tidy
  • Moving and handling donations and large items
  • Long standing volunteers may take responsibility for opening/closing the shop

Useful skills and experience

  • Good communication skills
  • Confident at working with different people
  • Good numeracy skills if using the till
  • Reliable and trustworthy
  • A sense of fun
  • Good team working skills
