A group of thrill-seeking fundraisers have meet at Tottenham Hotspurs Stadium to raise funds for Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice. On Sunday, 21 January and 18 February 2024, challengers tested their nerves to conquer The Dare Skywalk and Edge.

This adrenaline-pumped challenge, saw participants scaling the stadium on an exposed walkway with breath-taking views of London. They then stepped out onto a glass walkway which 46.8 metres above the pitch before tackling a controlled descent of 42 meters to the south Podium below.

The challenge had originally been scheduled as a Santa Abseil in December however this was postponed due to high winds. The new date in January saw some participants still choosing to adorn Santa suits to complete the challenge. We also had one participant take part dressed as Bat Women. Participants were taking part for a variety of reasons; some were raising money for the hospice in memory of a loved one, some were staff members, and others were looking to overcome a personal challenge.

Michaela, chose to take on the challenge to face her fears and describes how the challenge went for her: “It was fantastic as a whole, even though I was nervous, the staff were patient and willing to ease me into the abseil. I honestly had such a good time and I’m still telling everyone about it. I would definitely visit again!”

Another participant Paula chose to complete the challenge in memory of her friend Doug who was cared for by the hospice. ‘As Doug’s illness progressed, I remember a member of the Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice turning up to talk to him. I remained in the room while Doug talked to this lovely lady – again the discussion was so kind, caring, dignified. Doug was able to talk openly about his fears and worries.. And the hospice offered to provide a place for him if he wanted or needed it. That was a very special moment – and one I will never forget. And this is the reason I support the hospice. I loved every single minute of this challenge! The Dare Skywalk was fun and I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to do an abseil with an amazing group of people. I know my lovely Doug would have loved and laughed at this adventure!’

Challenge Events Fundraiser, Michael Fyall, said: “This was a brilliant challenge, and we are very proud of all the brave participants who took part. Thank you so much to our fundraisers for all their hard work and commitment. Thank you also to everyone who sponsored the team and donated. It has been amazing to see so many people come together to make a difference to their local community hospice.”

This challenge has so far raised over £4,654 for Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice, with sponsorship still coming in. Due to the amazing feedback we have had from participants the hospice has decided to run another group abseil this year at the same venue. If you’d like to join please click here.
